At 7 p.m. of May 16th, Chat Show was opened in the Third Lecture room of CUPL in Changping district. Professor Ming Zhang of Political and Public Administration School of Renmin University was guest in this stage. He firstly gave a brief introduction to origin of nationalism. In modern times, the concept of nationalism come from West and firstly presented by a French scholar Bourdin in 17th century. After that, it rapidly became a ideological trend supported by Germany and swept the Europe. The ideology emphasized the dominated status of state and nation was superiority over individual. In China, the nationalism, as a trend of thought was accepted and supported by students after May 4th Movement. After the foundation of China, we advocated that individual value was insignificant compared with national interests. However, we have confused the concept of country, nation, the people, party and leader over a quite long period of time. There was not an acceptable solution when the interests of subjects above mentioned contradicted with each other. Carrefour Event was a typical example. When it’s obstructed to pass the Olympic flame cross French and "Independent Tibet" appeared, people hurried to look for a vent to let off their angriness and dissents and Carrefour became a target just because of the rumors that the separatists obtained the help from French government. Although the strike was on the basis of patriotism, violence itself had lost the essences of humanity. As modern collage students and independent intellectuals, we should analyze the nature of the event with rational mind.
